What is an RSS feed?
RSS feeds (also RDF and ATOM feeds) are used to send content around the Internet. All types of publishers use them to make their content available to users outside of the original website - from Reuters to the humble, lone blogger! You can receive news, information, applications and blogs on the internet through RSS. Check out our RSS Guide for more.
What does RSS stand for?
"Really Simple Syndication", "RDF Site Summary" or "Rich Site Summary". It's a standardised way of content sharing on the web.
So where does Excite MIX come in?
To make the most of all the free live content available on the web, Excite MIX provides you with a single access point, where you can see all your favourites from just one page. The techie term for it is a Feed Aggregator. What you're seeing on your Excite MIX are the latest updates / news / content from the websites you choose.
Can I get news and sport headlines on my MIX?
Yes! With Excite MIX you can select the content from any of your favourite sites (in the form of RSS feeds) from our suggested sources. You can also pick and MIX content on your page from your own favourite sites. As long as they have an RSS feed, all you need to do is put the RSS feed's URL into Add Feed in the Add Content panel, and it will automatically appear on your page! Watch the demo below for further hints:
What if I don't want the content I've picked?
It doesn't matter, just delete it! Use the Delete button on the top right of the feed module to get rid of anything you don't want.
How do I know if my favourite websites have an RSS feed?
RSS feed logos () are starting to appear on loads of the Web's most popular sites. For example, many of the top news sites like the Guardian Unlimited and the BBC now have a link directly to their RSS feed. Blogging platforms and news aggregators like Google News also provide RSS, RDF or ATOM feeds. You'll be surprised how many new RSS feeds are being added to the web daily. If you want to stay up to date with the latest, check out the WebTwitcher blog on the bottom right of your MIX. We'll be updating you daily with our latest findings!
Can I view emails from more than one email account?
Yes. Just click on the Add Content button in the top left, and choose which email provider you have from our list. They will be added as modules to your page.
I can't find my email provider in your list!
You can add any POP mail account to your Excite MIX, as long as your provider gives you the POP mail server and port information. Contact your email provider for the details if you are unsure what they are.
Can I sort "My Feeds" into different folders?
Yes - click on the edit icon that appears to the right of the feed when you pass your mouse over it. You can create and name as many folder categories as you like, then hit "Move" to store the feeds where you can easily find them.
Can I have more than one page?
Yes - Just click on New Page to create more. Clicking on Rename lets you give the page a title. Try a new page for sports content, or another for entertainment or travel. It's a great way to organise all your favourite content! If you need more help watch the demo below:
